Marley is doing fantastic. We flew to Californina in May where Dr L put in a tissue expander in her upper right back. Dr L also took a portion of skin from her tricept area on her right arm and transplanted it to the back of her hand and repositioned her fingers to straight out and no longer growing backwards. We flew back home after a few days where she had
continual fills of saline into the expander until it reached a full capacity
of 510ccs. It was beautiful. We had the privilege and honor to have our close
friend Dr HLS complete the fills every other week in our home where there were
no car seats, parking, office visit stress- we’d end each one with a walk onto
the front porch where we’d look out over the pond and birds. It was a
completely selfless service by an individual chosen to serve a higher calling
to help others sometimes without rest between shifts. Dr HLS was truly a
blessing and continued reassurance that we were doing the absolute best for
Marley that we could do.
Marley's expander reached capacity in September and she had a few months to allow the skin to adjust and grow. We flew back to California in December. Dr L took out the expander and proceeded with a free flap skin transplant from the tissue expander that replaced the original transplanted skin on her right forearm. It was a lengthy surgery. It was a tough recovery mentally, but physically it is beautiful and healed text book. Dr L did an amazing job! She even redid the scar under Marley's arm as she didn't like the way it healed. The procedures were mindblowing and awesome.... But man, did it take it's toll on us and the family.
I'll share all that in the next chapter.
